Uterine fibroids are benign tumors of the uterus. They can remain completely symptom-free, but in some cases they can lead to severe menstrual pain, bleeding disorders or pressure problems, for example on the bladder or bowel. An unfulfilled desire to have children can also be affected by fibroids.

The diagnostic process begins with a detailed medical history and a thorough physical examination. We also use imaging techniques such as high-resolution ultrasound to determine the exact location, size and number of fibroids. This information is crucial in order to plan the best possible treatment together with you.

The treatment depends on several factors: the location and size of the fibroids, the existing symptoms, the age of the patient and the desire to preserve fertility. 

Basically, we distinguish between submucosal fibroids, which are located directly under the lining of the uterus, intramural fibroids, which are embedded deep in the muscles of the uterus, and subserosal fibroids, which are located underneath the peritoneum.

Depending on the individual situation, various treatment options are available. These include minimally invasive procedures such as myoma enucleation via uterine endoscopy for submucosal fibroids or laparoscopic removal for intramural and subserosal fibroids. In rare cases, such as with very large or numerous fibroids, an abdominal incision may be necessary. 

There are also modern methods such as thermal ablation using radiofrequency (e.g. Sonata) or myoma embolization, in which the blood supply to the fibroid is specifically interrupted. Drug treatments can also be useful in certain situations, for example to control symptoms or to prepare for an operation.
